MOTOR SPEECH DISORDERS
Childhood Apraxia of Speech
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a rare motor speech disorder that impacts a child's ability to plan and program the complex movements for speaking. Recognizing, diagnosing, and treating CAS and related motor speech disorders requires specialized training that differs from traditional articulation and phonological approaches. While many (wonderful, talented) therapists may treat only a handful of clients with CAS over the course of their career, my experience includes a dedicated clinical practicum experience in differential diagnosis of motor speech disorders, and over four years in a specialty clinic treating a caseload of over 75% CAS/suspected CAS. I have not only training but also extensive treatment experience implementing DTTC, ReST, Speech Motor Chaining, PROMPT, and Speech Intelligibility Treatment (for dysarthria) with clients ages 2-21 with a wide range of severities and co-occurring diagnoses.
GESTALT LANGUAGE PROCESSING &
Natural Language Acquisition
The early part of my career was spent in a classroom based model, teaching and providing group and individual intervention to children with receptive-expressive and pragmatic language differences, echolalia, hyperlexia, and/or autism. My background is in the SCERTS model and I have always taken an approach that values strengths, interests, and emotional/sensory support over compliance.
In 2021, it was a parent who introduced me (literally) to Meaningful Speech's Alex Zachos and the work of Marge Blanc, and my practice took a dramatic shift toward Natural Language Acquisition to address the unique support needs of children who develop language through echolalia. I have since become an NLA & Meaningful Speech trained provider and am so excited to offer this approach at Con Moto Speech Services.
